The Reason: Ch 9

Ch9

*Seem to me like you didn’t like my last chapter. =(
That’s okay cause it was beginning to build up to some more stuff that I got planned.
Into the story we go*


~Lunch Time~

Ron: Hey Ray!

Raymond: Where’s your interim?

Ron: She went to get something. Where’s Leila?

Raymond: I don’t know.

Ron: Didn’t I tell you to tell her to meet us here for lunch?

Raymond: Sorry! I kind of forgot.

Ron: What?

Raymond: Calm down. She’ll be here and why are you so eager to see her anyways? Is there something I should know?

Ron: No! Of course not! I just didn’t want her to feel left out.

Raymond: Such a nice guy. My sister would be lucky if you actually did like her.

Ron: Don’t say that. Leila’s great.

As Leila was walking towards the two she overheard Ron telling Raymond how “great” she was. She felt as if she was floating on the clouds after hearing him say that.

Leila: Hey! (Whacks Raymond on the head)

Raymond: What was that for?

Leila: That was for not telling me it was lunchtime. And this (whacks him on the head again) is for saying stuff behind my back.

Raymond: See Ron, she would be lucky if a guy like you would like someone like her. So violent!

Leila: This is what happens when you have 3 brothers who are either too busy to be with you or rather goes out and do nothing than to take you along. (Shoots Raymond a glare)

Ron started laughing: At least you HAVE siblings. Look at me I got no one.

Raymond: You still got me your old pal. (Smiles)

Ron: I guess.

~Flashback~

His mom was rushed to the hospital because her water broke. She was going to have her second child. But when she got to the hospital, all the doctors were just too busy to even look at her condition. Because of that they lost both her and the baby.

Ron: Can’t anyone see? My mom is in pain.

No one even paid any attention to him.

Ron: Mom, you have to hang on. There will be a doctor here that can help you.

Ron’s dad: Just hang on honey. Everything will be fine.

Here breathing began to weaken. She started to lose her lively colours. Finally a doctor came out to look at her. But it was too late.

Ron: Why? Why must you have to leave me? I want you here. I have so much to say to you mom. I love you. I swear, I will never let anyone suffer like this ever again.

Soon after Ron’s mother died, his father suffered from depression and went with her. Seeing both of them leave was the saddest thing that ever happened.

~End of flashback~

Raymond: Still thinking about them?

Ron: Of course! In one year I lost the two most important people in my life.

Leila: Now you got us.

Raymond: We could never replace them.

Leila: But at least I could put a smile on your face.

She walked over to Ron and sat down beside him. She then embraced him, which seem to have made all of those bad memories disappear.

Leila: When I was sad or mad you were there for me. So now it’s my turn.

Ron looked at her and smiles: But I remember when you were sad or mad I would kiss you to make you smile. (Pointing to his cheek)

Leila leaned over and pecked him on the cheek.

Leila: Is that better?

Ron: Much better.

Raymond started laughing: If I didn’t know better I swear I would think you two are a couple.

Ron then put his arms around Leila and got closer to her.

Ron: Don’t we make a cute couple?

Raymond continued to laugh: If you said cute as in naïve and gullible then yes.

Ron soon let go of Leila and got back to his normal position.

Leila: Hey Ron, interested in dinner tonight.

Raymond: You’re asking him out? (He opened his mouth and gasped)

Leila: Yup! I want him to meet the family (looking at Raymond)

Ron: Sure.

Leila: Bosco is cooking tonight so bring an empty stomach.

Raymond: He is?

Leila: You’re a horrible brother.

Raymond: But I am a very good doctor and very good looking. (He started to laugh)

Ron: How big can his head get?

Linda walked over and saw the three of them talking and laughing.

Linda: You don’t mind if I sat here, would you?

Raymond: I don’t mind. But you should ask the two lovebirds over there (pointing to Ron and Leila)

Linda: O, I’m sorry for interrupting.

Ron: Don’t you ever listen to your mentors and teachers?

Linda: I’m sorry.

Ron: I told you like a million times.

Linda: I’m really sorry for bothering you. (She turned around and started to walk away)

Raymond: Look what you did?

Ron: Linda, don’t go! I was joking and next time don’t listen to Raymond. You should only believe half of what he says. Come and sit.

Linda: Hopefully I’m not interrupting you two.

Leila: We’re just good friends. You could take him if you want.

Ron: Hey, I’m not a toy you can’t just throw me around like that.

Leila: Of course I can. (Pushes Ron towards Raymond)

Raymond: I don’t want him. (Stands up, pushes Ron towards Linda and walked away laughing)

Ron eventually stopped moving around and found himself resting his head on Linda’s lap. He looked up and saw Linda slightly blushing.

Ron: Sorry! Those two could be really childish sometimes.

Linda looking down at him: It’s okay.

Ron: Maybe I should get up now.

The Reason: Ch 8

Tadaa!

Bosco: Such nice pictures, I think I should show it to everyone.

Leila: No! Don’t do that.

Bosco: Why not? You and Ron are such a cute couple.

Leila: There’s nothing between us.

Bosco: Don’t lie to your brother know little Leila, if there’s nothing between you two then why were you kissing…IN PUBLIC?

Leila: Well, it was either paying a couple of thousand dollars or kissing Ron?

Bosco: I wouldn’t kiss Ron.

Leila: Arghhhh…. Say whatever you want but don’t tell Raymond, if he knows then half of this world would know and he would never let me rest.

Bosco started laughing: All right I’ll leave you alone. But if one day you two do start dating I’ll sell you these pictures as a memory token. (He continued to laugh)


NEXT DAY at the HOSPITAL

Ron and Raymond were sitting in the cafeteria having their coffee.

Ron: How was you date last night?

Raymond: What date?

Ron: With Michelle?

Raymond: Dude, that wasn’t a date. She’s already taken and you know I’m not that type of guy.

Ron: Then where did you go?

Raymond: I went around, here and there.

Ron: You ditched your own sister to go out and do nothing?

Raymond: pretty much. But I know that if there’s no one home, you’ll always be there for her. So no worries for me.

Ron chuckled: So now you’re taking advantage of me?

Raymond: Don’t put it like that, you should say that you help me and I’ll help you. Maybe I’ll even get you a girlfriend.

Ron: Just mind your own business.

Raymond: Here is a lovely candidate walking towards you now.

Ron turned around and to his surprise it was Linda.

Linda: Hi there.

Raymond: Morning! (He nudged Ron.)

Ron: O, hi.

Linda: Are you always here this early?

Raymond: He’s not here this early he practically lives here. (He started laughing)

Ron: Don’t listen to him. I’m usually here a few minutes early to grab a coffee before all the excitement. (He winked)

Linda smiled.

Raymond: I’ll leave you two alone.

Linda slightly blushed.

Ron: All right. I’ll see you later. Lunch? And tell Leila too.

Raymond: Ya, sure.

Ron looked at his watch and to his surprise it was nine.

Ron: We better get going.

Linda: Ok.

Ron and Linda walked out of the cafeteria and walked to the ER.

Ron: O, about the housing thing I mentioned to you yesterday.

Linda: yeah.

Ron: Well I spoke to the head of the hospital and he said he’d consider it.

Linda: Really?

Ron: Ya.

Linda: Thanks.

Ron: No problem.

They reach the ER and to Ron’s surprise it was actually not that busy. Just a few people here and there with either a cold or a high fever nothing too shocking or severe. A light morning is always good cause it also means that not many people are ill which meant that everyone is doing a good job.

Ron was very happy to see that there weren’t a lot of people there. It wasn’t because he was lazy but more because it meant that a lot more people were healthy.

Ron: If everyday were like this the world would be a better place.

Linda: I guess so.

Ron: Well, we still got to get to work. Can’t leave these people waiting.

Tavia: Good morning Ron.

Ron: Morning. How did you get home yesterday?

Tavia: I drove.

Ron: O you should have told me to pick you up and drive you home. Car-pooling is the way to go. (He smiled)

Tavia smiled back: Maybe next time.

As Ron and Linda walked away Tavia stood there smiling.

Claire: Oooooooooo…He spoke to you today?

Tavia: He always does.

Claire: Not like that though.

Tavia: Yes he does, and besides we’re good friends.

Claire: But you don’t just want to be his friend though.

Tavia: Shut up!

Claire: Well you better make your move quick cause by the looks of it; you might have a challenger (pointing to Linda)

Tavia: She’s just an interim.

Claire: And she’s young and pretty.

Tavia: Leila is too.

Claire: But Leila and Ron I don’t think that’s even possible.

Myolie walked by and heard their conversation and started laughing.

Myolie thinking to herself: There’s nothing that’s impossible.

The Reason: Ch 7

Hey, sorry for the delay, but do enjoy!!!

Ron: O, we’re sorry. Didn’t mean to cause so much noise.

Waiter: That’s okay sir. Not a problem.

Leila: We’re both really sorry.

The waiter walked away and whispered into the manager’s ear. The manager then went to the center of the restaurant where there was a mini dance floor and spoke into the microphone.

Manager: Can I please get everyone’s attention please? (There was a moment of silence) So for those who ordered the Lover’s Special, included in that special is a little activity. Everyone who ordered must participate or else they will have to pay for everyone who is here tonight.

Ron: see, we shouldn’t have ordered it.

Leila: It might be fun.

Ron: We’ll wait and see.

Manager: The prize for this little contest is basically a trip for two to Japan.

Leila: Oooo…Japan.

Manager: so what you got to do is simple, the couples that ordered the special will have to come down to the dance floor (everyone who ordered came down). The task is quite simple; the couple that shares the longest kiss will win the prize.

Leila: Look what you did.

Ron: What did I do?

Leila: you got us into this.

Ron: umm… actually it was you.

Leila: You could’ve stopped me.

Ron: We can’t chicken out cause I’m not planning on spending a couple of thousand dollars.

Leila: Fine, I guess we’ll just do what we’re told.

Manager: Ok, ready?

Ron: Just close your eyes and imagine I’m your prince charming, the one who you want to spend all your life with and we’ll get over this okay?

Leila nodded.

Manager: GO!

Ron wrapped his arms around her, as she closed her eyes and tried to imagine her prince charming the image of Ron appeared. She then felt his lips touching hers as the two of them kissed. They felt that they didn’t want to stop or let go. It just felt so right to them. They no longer cared that they were just great friends but now everyone around them could see the sparks that were flying. One by one the other couples failed to kiss for a long period of time. Eventually the only “couple” left was Ron and Leila. They didn’t realize how long they’ve been kissing for, nor did they care. Time seemed to have stopped for just the two of them.

Sitting in the other end of the restaurant was Bosco and Myolie.

Myolie: Isn’t that Ron and Leila?

Bosco: Where?

Myolie: The two in the middle of the dance floor who are still kissing.

Bosco: I don’t think so. It can’t be Ron and Leila, they’re just friends.

Myolie: What if I’m right?

Bosco: You’re probably not.

Myolie: Just in case, I’ll take a picture and if it is them, I could use it to blackmail Ron to changing shifts with me.

Bosco was shaking his head.

Back on the dance floor the manager finally stopped them by announcing that they’ve won. Yet when he announced that they’ve won, their kiss was still lingering on until finally they decided to part.

Manager: Congratulations! You two have won the trip to Japan.

Leila was so happy that she gave Ron a hug and a kiss. Ron then picked her up and twirled her around.

Myolie: I was right. It’s Ron and Leila.

Bosco: It is!

Myolie: Told you!

Bosco: Well I should take a few pictures to blackmail Leila.

Myolie: I’ll take some more too.

~Ron and Leila~

Ron: We won!

Leila: It wasn’t so bad.

Ron: Yeah. And I didn’t feel a thing.

Leila: Neither did I.

Ron: It’s getting late. We should be going now cause tomorrow we got to work right?

Leila: O ya. I almost forgot. Let’s go then.

Ron and Leila walked out of the restaurant and started walking towards Ron’s car.

Leila: Remember the first time you kissed me?

Ron: Ya, I was like seven or something and you were crying.

Leila: You still remember?

Ron: Why not?

Leila: I thought you would’ve forgotten something like that by now.

Ron: of course not.

Leila blushed slightly hearing that Ron actually remembered that moment when he first kissed her. In her eyes, from that moment on Ron became her hero, her knight in shining armor that could protect her and save her from anything and everything.

Ron opened the door for her.

Leila: Thanks.

Ron: No problem.

He then drove her home. When they got there Ron parked the car in front of Leila’s place.

Leila: Bye, I’ll see you tomorrow.

Ron: Wait.

Leila: What?

Ron leaned over and gently kissed her on the cheek.

Leila looked very startled

Ron: Good night.

As Leila got out of his car she felt a rush of blood to her face. She could tell by that feeling that she was blushing.

As Ron drove off he thought to himself:

Why did I do that? What was I thinking? What if she feels awkward now cause of that? I don’t want to ruin our friendship. What’s gotten over me? I know I shouldn’t have done it but now that I have, I might as well deal with it.

~Leila’s home~

About an hour later Bosco came home.

Bosco: So where did you go tonight Leila?

Leila: I just had dinner with Ron.

Bosco: Did you two do anything?

Leila: No, we just had dinner.

Bosco: Are you sure?

Leila: Ya, I’m pretty sure.

Bosco: Then what’s this? (Shows Leila the pictures on his phone)

Leila: Where did you get those?

I think this definitely made up for the finale of A Truthful Lie, no? lol

The Reason: Ch 6

Ch6

Ron arrived at Leila’s place and went up to get her.

Ron called in.

Leila: hello?

Ron: Hey there, gorgeous.

Leila started laughing: Does this mean you’re standing in front of my door?

Ron: Pretty much. Yeah!

Leila opens the door: Are you going to stand out there forever?

Ron: I would if no one invites me inside.

Leila: Is that necessary? You’re like family.

Ron: Really?

Leila: Like one of my brothers.

Ron: Does that mean I’ll never have a chance with you?

Leila blushed: I guess your hunger is getting to your head.

Ron looked at her in the eye: What if I meant it?

Leila felt her heart began to pound even harder.

Ron couldn’t keep a straight face and burst into laugher.

Leila: Ha! Ha! Very funny! Can we please go now? I’m starving.

Ron: All right. So, where do want to go?

Leila: Don’t know. Doesn’t matter.

Ron: I’ll just drive off randomly and you can tell me where to stop.

Leila: Sounds like a plan.

They got onto Ron’s car and drove off. Ron turned on his favourite song… The Reason by: Hoobastank. Ron felt that he could really connect to that song. Just the first line describes him. “I’m not a perfect person, there’s many things I wished I didn’t do”

Leila didn’t pay attention to the lyrics nor the melody but more to Ron. She knew him since forever. When she was younger she always thought he was her prince charming who would carry her off to a wonderful place. As she got older, she realized that because of their close friendship that could never be.

Leila: STOP!

Ron: Hmm… where are we?

Leila: How would I know?

Ron: You told me stop.

Leila: Well, you told me to tell you to stop.

Ron parked his car and they both got out.

Ron: I guess we’ll just walk until we find ourselves a restaurant.

Leila: I guess so.

They began to walk and spoke about their childhood. After walking for a few blocks Leila was pretty tired.

Leila: I’m tired.

Ron: That’s what you get for not working out.

Leila: Like you do?

Ron: Of Course! I go to the gym every week.

Leila: If you’re so strong, then just give me a piggyback ride.

Ron: Just like old times?

Leila: Just like old times.

Ron smiled, bent down and allowed Leila to get on his back. He trudged along and many people were staring at them.

Ron: You definitely need to work out.

Leila: Are you saying I’m fat?

Ron: Not fat, just a bit heavy.

Leila started hitting him on the shoulders.

Ron: If you do that again I’ll drop you.

Leila: You wouldn’t.

Ron: Pretty sure I would.

Leila: Well then all those people would see.

Ron: I don’t care about what people say.

Leila: Fine be like that.

Ron started to laugh: I won’t drop you; I’d rather have you on my back for the rest of my life.

Leila blushed: You can put me down now.

Ron: Don’t misunderstand I didn’t meant what you think I did. Wait, I’m confusing myself now. I DID mean what I said but…

Leila started to laugh: You don’t need to explain just put me down.

Ron: Why?

Leila: Unless you want to carry me into the restaurant then, be my guess.

Ron: Oh. I didn’t notice.

Ron slowly put Leila down making sure that she wouldn’t hurt herself. The two of them walked in.

Ron: Table for two?

Manager: This way.

They followed him to their table.

Leila: It’s a pretty nice place.

Ron: I’ve never been here before, have you?

Leila: Nope.

Waiter: What can I get you two today?

Ron: Anything you would recommend?

Waiter: Well we do have a “Lover’s Special” if you’re interested.

Ron: What do you think Leila?

Leila: Sure why not.

Waiter: Ok, I’ll be right back with your entrées.

Ron looked at Leila and smiled.

Leila: what are you smiling at?

Ron: I don’t know. Just felt like smiling at you.

Waiter: Here you are.

Leila: This smells good, what is it?

Waiter: These are our famous crab croquettes in the form of two hearts for this special. Bon Appétit!

Ron: Let’s eat!

As the two of them ate their appetizers the main course came and boy it smelled good. By the looks in their eyes you could tell that they were hungry and amazed by the main dish. Just the smell made their mouth waters. Can you smell it? That buttery scent was flying through the air. After their main course came the dessert. A heart shaped tiramisu.

Leila: My favourite!

Ron: Hey, save some for me too.

Leila: We’ll have to see about that.

As they dug through their cake their forks clashed making metal noises that caught the attention of everyone else.

Waiter: May I help you?

The Reason: Ch 5

Ch 5

Mr. Chan and his wife began to giggle: The way you cared about her when she just had a little sprain.

Ron smiled: But that’s my job. After all I am a doctor and I care for everyone the same.

Mrs. Chan: No, I see something between the two of you.

Ron: Don’t say that, what if my girlfriend hears.

Mr. Chan: Doctor Ng, I see you once a week and if you had a girlfriend I wouldn’t be able to see you once a week.

Ron: I guess I can never tell a lie in front of you, right Mr. Chan?

Mrs. Chan: Of course not. You can’t lie in front of someone who is the best at lying. (Gives her husband a nudge)

Ron started laughing: Hopefully when I’m as old as you two, I would find someone.

Mrs. Chan: Doctor, you know, you should cherish what is in front of you.

Ron smiled: I’ll talk to you two later my friend is calling me.

Mr. Chan whispering to his wife: Excuses.

Ron walked over to where Raymond was.

Raymond: So.

Ron: So what?

Raymond: Come on man, when are you going to admit that you like her?

Ron: Like who?

Raymond: Don’t pretend you don’t know.

Ron: Leila?

Raymond widened his mouth and gasped.

Raymond: You like my sister?

Ron: No!

Raymond: Then why did you think I was talking about her?

Ron: I don’t know. Who else would you refer to?

Raymond pointing to Linda: Umm, maybe that lovely young lady sitting over there with the bandaged foot that was bandaged with care by the second most good-looking doctor in our hospital.

Ron: Second? Then who’s the first?

Raymond: Me of course. Dude, your charming and all but you cannot look better than me.

Ron: Okay buddy. No wonder you always get dumped, with that type of ego who would want to share the rest of their life with YOU?

Raymond: Stop changing the topic, and to get your facts straight. I dump them, not the other way around.

Ron: Whatever. (He walked away)

Raymond: You can’t lie to yourself and you definitely can’t lie to your best buddy.

After the volunteers looked at all the elderly, it was time to go home. Ron walked over to where Linda was sitting and found her asleep. He then gently picked her up making sure that he wouldn’t wake her up. He then carried her to his car and placed her inside the car gently. He buckled the seat belt for her and went back inside.

Ron: Raymond, you can drive your sister home right?

Raymond: You brought her here so you’re going to have to drive her back.

Leila: What type of brother are you?

Raymond: I was just joking. Ok fine. Ron you drive Linda home and do whatever you have to do. (He winked at Ron)

Ron: I’m not even going to ask what you’re thinking about.

Raymond: Well I wasn’t going to tell you anyways.

Ron walked over to his car and got on. Linda was still asleep and Ron was gazing at her as if she was the night sky covered in the millions of stars.

~Flashback~

Ella was still asleep in Ron’s car. All he wanted to do was place a soft and gentle kiss on her forehead. He knew that he would really miss her once she’s gone and this was probably the last time he’ll see her cause tomorrow she would be heading to Australia.

Ella suddenly woke up.

Ella: What are you looking at?

Ron: An angel that fell asleep in my car.

A smile appeared on Ella’s face.

Ella: You and your sweet words. When I’m gone you better not use them on anyone else.

~End of Flashback~

It’s been exactly 7 years since he last saw her. In Ron’s mind he had imagined her probably married with kids. He knew that who ever she married would have provided her with a better life than he could ever have. Going into medicine was his best and worst choice. He barely had anytime to spend with her and he knew deep down that she wanted him near everyday. So it’s better off that she left.

At that moment Linda slowly opened her eyes and saw Ron looking at her. She quickly closed her eyes and pretended that she was asleep. Ron then buckled up and drove off. When he arrived in front of her place he wanted to wake her up but didn’t know what to do. If he nudged her she might feel as if he was trying to invade her. He never really had a girl sleep in his car other than his girlfriend or Leila. So this time it was a bit awkward.

Ron thinking: Maybe I could just carry her up. What if the neighbors see, then they would think that we’re doing something. I don’t want to ruin her life like that.

As Ron was mumbling to himself, Linda woke up.

Linda: Was I asleep all this time?

Ron: probably.

Linda: I’m sorry, I didn’t want to cause you any inconvenience. Did you drive Leila home?

Ron: Well, her brother drove her.

Linda: O.

Ron: Your place is pretty far from where the hospital. Did you ever think of applying for one of those apartments funded by the hospital for doctors near the hospital?

Linda: I did. But I doubt I would get it.

Ron: I’ll put in a few words for you.

Linda: Thank you. I better get going now. I’ll see you tomorrow Doctor Ng.

Ron: Bye. (As he watched her walk off he remembered the last time he saw Ella and how he still misses her deeply)

Ron’s phone began to ring.

Ron: Hello.

Leila: Where are you?

Ron: Are you checking up on me?

Leila: Maybe.

Ron: Well I just drove Linda home and now I’m planning to go and get something to eat.

Leila: Can you come and take me with you?

Ron: What happened to your brother?

Leila: hmm…Kevin is working late AGAIN, Raymond is on a date with Michelle and Bosco is probably out with Myolie.

Ron started laughing: All right I’ll be there.

Leila: Ever since I was little you would always be there for me…(she started muttering a few words)

Ron: What did you say? I couldn’t really hear you.

Leila: Nothing. I’ll see you then.

Ron: I’m on my way. Ron to the rescue!

Leila giggled: My hero! (She said it with that country accent)

The two laughed simultaneously until Ron said a good bye and hung up.
