As he turned his back towards her and started walking away, he couldn’t help but shed a tear. He tried to rationalize the fact that he was not crying, but rather, it was his allergy reaction that was acting up again. He quickly wiped away the fallen tear and continued walking, with thoughts of her still lingering in his mind.
She stood there watching him walk away as tears one by one overwhelmed her and started to fall. She didn’t want it to end this way...it was not meant to end this way...they were supposed to be together, happily together but why...why has fate toyed with her and made him hear such cruel remarks. But then why, why was she not able to admit the fact that she, the daughter of the chairman of Dynasty Corp could be with such a guy. Why was she so fearful of how the world would look at her?
But the reality is that this is how society functions. The essence of society is reflected upon people, and how they see the world, and how they assume the world would see them.
The snow started to fall as she continued to stand there watching his figure become distant to her. She wanted to call him back, tell him how sorry she was, but knew that she had already apologized more than she had expected to do so, and yet he never accepted her apology. Was he being cruel or was he too hurt to accept her apology was the question that was running through her mind until she heard someone call her name.
Guy: Linda!
She turned around to see who it was, and before she could even do so, she felt someone’s arms wrapping around her waist.
Linda: What are you doing?
Guy: I missed you
Linda: Bosco, let go of me
Bosco: Oh come on...it’s not like we’re not close...
She finally broke free from his embrace and faced him
Linda: There’s nothing between us...don’t you understand?
Bosco: Nothing? Our fathers are business partners...we knew each other since we even knew how to speak...
Linda: We’re good childhood friends...
Bosco: We were predetermined to be together...
Linda looked at him and couldn’t believe what he had just said...such foolish and childish words coming out of a fully grown man who is helping his father run a multi-billion dollar corporation. He was not meant for her...he’s nothing compared to the more mature and sensible Ron that she was accustomed to being with...
Linda: Predetermined? Nothing in this world is predetermined
Bosco: But it’s what our families want...for us to be together...we’re meant to be...rich, powerful...
Linda: you really think that because we’re alike in such materialistic ways that we should be together?
Bosco looked at her: Why not? You wouldn’t choose some guy whose family can’t even afford to buy their own house over me are you?
Linda: I...
Bosco: Of course you wouldn’t. Someone of our calibre would be around with someone of the same calibre or of greater calibre and not the other way around...
The words that he was saying...they were her reality, weren’t they? Would she truly be able to live a life without all her luxurious clothing, shoes, a big home with servants at her heel cleaning up after her? She looked at Bosco...and tried to imagine her with him, maybe a future between them...but all she could see was not she but rather a life like her mother’s. One that only contained shopping, gossiping and the ongoing worry that her husband had cheated on her...and she knew at once that this was not the life she wanted.
Linda: Maybe I would...
Bosco: What?
Linda: Maybe...I’d be with someone who doesn’t believe in this nonsense you’re talking about...you know...there are people out there who are talented, more so than both you and I, but who come from not so splendid backgrounds...
Bosco laughed: you’re joking right. It sounds to me like you’re going to try and find true love? What is this? A fairytale? What guy would actually go out with you because of who you are and not because your father owns a multi-billionaire corporation? Think about it Linda...
Linda: I’m amazed we’re having this conversation in the middle of the street...and besides...
Bosco: whatever...I’ll call you later...when you wake up from your fantasy...
With that he too left her standing there...but this time she didn’t bother watch him walk away like she did with Ron...for she wasn’t yearning for him to be back by her side...
She truly missed him...just like how he misses her...
Her image continued to linger in his mind as he reached home. He took the elevator up to the apartment that his entire family was staying in and went inside. As he walked in he could smell the amazing aroma of the soup his mother was making, and as she heard him walk in she welcomed him with open arms...
Ron’s Mom (Michelle Yim): You’re home! How was your day? Oh, there’s a letter on the table for you...it’s from one of those companies you applied to...do you think they accepted you?
Ron chuckled at the sight of his overtly excited mother: I find you so adorable sometimes...
Michelle: Of course I’m adorable...or how else would I produce such a charming young man like you
Ron laughed: I think I smell something burning...
Michelle: What? I don’t smell anything...but I’ll go and check anyways...just in case...
With that she ran back into the kitchen as Ron took the opportunity to pick up the letter that was on the table and went to his room.
He sat down on his bed and carefully looked at the unopened envelope that he was holding...apparently the company that had sent him the letter was no other than Dynasty Corp. He slowly opened it and started reading...the letter suggested that the manager of their design department wanted an interview with him...
He refolded the letter and shoved it back into the envelope...Dynasty Corp...he should’ve realized what was going on. He remembered telling her when they were studying overseas where he wanted to work when he got back...and he remembered the excitement on her face when he had said that he wanted to work for Dynasty Corp...
But now...he didn’t know whether or not he wanted to be there anymore. How could he torture himself in such a way...being there...being in a company where her father was the boss, and creating even a higher possibility for them to meet? But...if he didn’t go to the interview...he would lose out...wouldn’t he? He would be letting go of an opportunity of a life time...and of course he didn’t want to do that...he couldn’t...he couldn’t continue to watch his mother work as a cleaning staff...suffering from all those back pains trying to pay the bills...he just simply couldn’t.
He took out the letter again and continued to read where he left off...his chance for creating a better life for his entire family relied on this one interview that will take place the following day at noon.
He tried to put a smile on his face before walking out of his room to tell his mom the good news...but the image of her stopped his smile from forming. What if the interviewer was her? What would he do? How could he go through with it? But on the other hand...it shouldn’t matter...for he had ended their relationship...
Even though their relationship was over...he still loved her...and maybe this was his opportunity to make a name for himself...to bring himself up to her status so that he could properly be with her, without being mocked by the world for loving her money and not her. The irony with that was the fact that he had no knowledge of her actual background...until he came back...and it was her that fell for him first.
~Flashback~
Ron was sitting in the library looking over his drawings one last time before having to submit it in his next class. As he sat there, he noticed that someone was watching him...and immediately turned around...
He looked at the girl who was sitting at the table directly behind him and she immediately turned pink.
Ron: is there something wrong with my drawing?
Girl: Oh no...I think they’re amazing...
Ron: Do you really think so?
She nodded enthusiastically as he got up and took a seat at the table she was sitting at, but directly across from her.
Ron: I’m Ron...
Girl: and I’m Linda...I think we have a few classes together
Ron: We do?
Linda smiled: I think so...but you always sit at the back...while I sit very close to the front
Ron: Oh...
Linda: I really like your designs...they’re quite refreshing...
Ron: I’m not so confident about them...they seem a bit...
Linda: Plain?
Ron nodded: But I don’t know what I would add to it...
Linda: If you don’t mind... (she took out her pencil)
Ron: Not at all...go right ahead...
She started adding in a few details here and there onto his drawings as he watched her...
Ron: Thanks...it looks great with that added detail there...
She smiled at him
Ron: You have a lovely smile
Linda blushed at his remark: If you’re trying to use flattery to repay me...
Ron: I think it’s working...but I still owe you one...and I’m very thankful that even though we’ve just met...you decided to help me out...anyways...I need to go now...submit this in...
Linda: Oh...ok...
Ron: Well...I guess you’ll know where to find me in class if you ever decide you’re thirsty or hungry or what not so that I could repay you
He walked away holding his drawings in his hand and a smile plastered onto his face
~end of flashback~
Ron smiled to himself: She really does have a lovely smile...
He walked out of his room and into the kitchen where his mother was busy cooking their dinner...
Ron: Mom...they want an interview with me tomorrow at noon!
Michelle: That’s great...maybe they’ll accept you since you’re not only talented but also very good looking...so I guess tonight I’ll pray that your interviewer tomorrow will be a lady...so you could use your talent and charm all at once
Ron laughed and kissed his mom on the cheek
Ron: You’re just too adorable
